Employee Benefits Summary - Canada

Thomson & Thomson (T&T) provides employees who are scheduled to work 24 hours per week or more with an extremely comprehensive and attractive benefits package. The information provided here is a brief summary only.

Employee and Dependent Health Benefits
Health benefits are provided by Sun Life Insurance. A listing of options are available in the Nelson Policy Guide. www.sunnet.sunlife.com

Employee and Dependent Dental Benefits
Dental benefits are provided by Sun Life Insurance. Sun Life Insurance pays benefits for a variety of expenses including Basic Services (80% coverage), Major Restorative Services (50% coverage), and child orthodontia (50% coverage, lifetime max $1,000). Combined annual maximum for Basic Services and Major Restorative of $2,500 per insured. $25.00/$50.00 deductible per year.

Employee and Dependent Vision Benefits
Vision benefits are provided by Sun Life Insurance. The coverage works in conjunction with the health benefits. Sun Life Insurance allows employees between the ages of 21 and 65 to secure a comprehensive vision examination every 24 months. Employees are also eligible for $250 towards the cost of glasses and contacts every 24 months.

Basic Employee Group Life Insurance
Employees are given 2x annual earnings, maximum benefit of $600,000. Sun Life must approve satisfactory evidence of insurability for amounts over $255,000.

Employee & Spousal Optional Life Insurance
Employees may purchase increments of $10,000 to a maximum benefit of $200,000. Amounts of Optional Life will be issued only after satisfactory evidence of insurability has been approved by Sun Life.

Dependent Life Insurance
Eligible Spouse: $5,000
Eligible dependent children from 14 days of age: $2,500

Thomson Canada Limited Employees' Retirement Plan
Full-time employees are eligible to participate in the Plan as of their first day of employment. Part-time employees must satisfy the two-year waiting period provided you:
  • Earn at least 35% of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) earnings ceiling or,
  • Work at least 700 hours

    Employees may contribute between 3 and 6 percent of earnings to the plan. Matching contributions are made based on your length of plan membership. Contributions are tax deductible, up to the maximum permitted by the Revenue Canada. You will at all times have vested rights to your account balance including company contributions (Quebec employees only). Increases or decreases in contribution percentages can be made in March of each year. Changes to an employee's investment style or reallocating funds within the investments may be done at any time directly with Sun Life. Participants have daily access to their account information through Sun Life Financial.

    T&T Profit Sharing Plan
    The company's profit sharing contribution is based on the Operating Income Target, which is established at the beginning of each year. If the target is met, each eligible participant receives a percentage of his/her salary deposited directly into the RRSP Plan with Sun Life. Employees are eligible to receive the Company Profit Sharing contribution if they completed 1000 hours in the plan year and are employed as of December 31st of the plan year. Employees become vested in profit sharing contributions immediately.

    Disability Benefits
    Short Term Disability (STD)
    Short-term disability benefits are provided by Nelson, which guarantees eligible employees a specific percentage of salary continuance for a maximum period of twenty-six (26) weeks. Level of benefit will depend on length of service (see table below). Benefits become effective on the first day following seven (7) consecutive calendar days absence due to illness or injury. Employee must be under the care of a legally licensed medical practitioner.

Long Term Disability (LTD)
If you have been totally disabled and unable to work for more than 6 months, the LTD Plan will pay you 66.67% of your salary (up to $6,000/month) for the duration of your disability or up to the maximum benefit period of your 65th birthday.

Parental Leave
Permanent Employees (male and female) who work 24 hours or more will be allotted 5 extra days paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child. Allotted time must be used within 3 months of the birth or adoption and prior to any unpaid leave.

Adoption Assistance Program
Employees working 20 hours or more with at least 6 months of service are eligible to receive adoption assistance. T&T will reimburse for expenses of up to $3000 for costs incurred for the legal adoption proceedings of a child who is either under age 18 or coverage 18 but physically or mentally incapable of caring for himself or herself. Qualifying expenses include reasonable and necessary adoption fees, court costs, travel-related expenses and attorney's fees related to the adoption proceedings.

Time Off Benefits
Vacations - Employees accrue between 10 and 20 days of vacation annually based upon on their length of service with T&T. Vacation is accrued on a monthly basis. If an employee is hired on or before the 15th of a month, they will accrue vacation for that month.

Holidays - The Company provides employees with 12 paid holidays annually (10 designated and 2 floating holidays).

Sick Time - Employees are provided with up to 7 days of paid sick leave annually. Sick time is prorated for new hires based upon the number of months you are employed during the calendar year.

Tuition Reimbursement
Eligible employees may receive up to $1,500 (Canadian dollars) of tuition assistance annually towards approved courses. Employees will receive 100% reimbursement with a grade C or better. Employees are eligible after six months of service.


Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The EAP is designed to offer employees and their family members a confidential resource to help resolve a wide variety of issues such as depression, stress, alcohol and drug abuse, family or relationship concerns, and eldercare and childcare concerns. The EAP has experienced counselors available through an 800 number 24 hours a day. T&T pays 100% of the cost of the plan.

Fitness Reimbursement
For employees who work outside of the North Quincy office, T&T offers a subsidized fitness reimbursement program. All non-Quincy employees who work more than 20 hours are eligible to participate in T&T's fitness center reimbursement program. T&T will reimburse employees on an annual basis up to $575 (Canadian dollars) for the cost of a fitness center membership. To receive reimbursement, you must submit the Fitness Reimbursement Form along with a copy of your receipt or canceled check, for the full annual amount, indicating proof of payment. If you pay your membership on a monthly basis, you can submit for reimbursement at the end of the year indicating proof of payment for each month (some Fitness Centers will allow you to pay for the entire year up front). This form must be completed and returned to Human Resources in order for you to take advantage of this benefit.

In addition, Thomson & Thomson has a contract with Nautilus Plus which offers T&T employees the opportunity of becoming a member at preferential rates. Some highlights of the contract include:
  • Choice of 4 different annual membership packages entirely subsidized by T&T (up to $575max)
  • Integration Program
  • Access to the Nautilus Plus network of 25 centers.

If the Nautilus Plus membership program chosen exceeds $575, employees are responsible for the payment of the balance. Also, please be aware that this is a taxable benefit at 50% therefore the amount must be included on an employees T-4 and will be spread over two pay periods.

PC Loan Program
Employees may borrow up to $3,750 Canadian dollars at a low interest rate (based on Revenue Canada's Prescribed Rate) toward the purchase of PC equipment (such as hardware, printer, modem, etc.) The minimum loan amount is $500. The low-interest loan will be paid back to T&T through payroll deductions (in six-month increments) by Nelson Canada over a period not to exceed two years. Employees may only have one outstanding PC loan at a time. The low interest loan may be paid in full at any time.

Walt Disney's "Disney Club"
T&T offers employees a discounted membership to the Walt Disney's "Disney Club". By joining the Magic Kingdom Club you can take advantage of discounts at Disney parks, special room rates, merchandise discounts, and other travel benefits.
